When reading the Jamaica Observer, one of the first things you may notice is the amount of coverage given to musicians. You have to be a bit careful when reading the headlines to not confuse names with verbs.
While Jamaica may seem like a blissful place, today’s paper headlines a shooting of a 19 year old by police.
Police were on duty at the Jarrett Lane/Mountain View Avenue intersection in Kingston on Thursday after a tense confrontation with gangs. That intersection was blocked by residents earlier in the week as they protested against the police shooting of a 19-year-old man from the community. The police said they went into the area in response to heavy gunfire involving rival gangs when they came under equally heavy gunfire from both gangs. The young man was shot when the police returned the gunfire.
An infant was beaten to death by her grand uncle, who was attacked by villagers while trying to flee.
